The Encyclopedia of Arda

We are homeschooling family of six, no, well, eight if you include the adults as well. And you should, because homeschooling really is a family affair.

We believe in God, great books, being outside, and that homemade always tastes better than store-bought. One of us (fosco) works as a presales engineer; the other (ezmerelda) serves as headmistress and generalissima.

The children are:

  • Bluebell
  • Pancho
  • Daisy
  • Tulip
  • Lefty
  • Buttercup
  • Rowdy

We use the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling, so we tend towards the classics bookwise. We stopped watching television several years ago, though we still keep it around for movies and such in the guest room upstairs. Since we don’t get out a whole lot in the evenings, we’ve discovered Netflix to be A Good Thing.

We watch birds, study the sky and go to the occasional Renaissance festival. We like botanical gardens, arboretums, Silver-Age comic books, making things, cooking and baking, riding our bicycles, growing things to eat, and Tolkien. One of us has learned to knit, and I won’t say who.

We are small-o-orthodox Catholics, and strive to live in complete fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church. It ain’t easy. We like movies, especially old ones. Recent favorites: The Caine Mutiny (me), The Lion in Winter (her) and Casablanca (both of us).

Our blogonyms are also from Tolkein, albeit indirectly. I brewed them up from the Hobbit Name Generator. Except for Pancho and Lefty – those came from the song. If we must needs be called anything here, let it be The Hobnottles. If, by chance, you happen recognize us from one of my earlier blog-incarnations, I ask you to please respect our desire to remain more or less anonymous here. Apropos, I’m a bit circumspect as regards revealing our location. Suffice it to say that we live in the middle of Tennessee.
